Many of England's historic structures, including many domestic period properties, were constructed using traditional timber framing techniques. These frames were usually built with locally sourced timber such as oak, elm, and chestnut. However, towards the end of the 18th century and throughout the 19th century, imported softwood is found to have been used. Preserving and restoring these historic timber structures is an important part of England's architectural heritage.
Some of the main types of timber framing styles are:
- Post and Truss: The most found still surviving today. Makes use of the purlin roof. Principal rafters are jointed into the tie beams to form roof trusses which carry the purlin.
- Box Frame: No purlin. Consists of wall frames connected by tie beams at intervals to create bays. The roof bears onto the external walls as a separate structural element.
- Cruck Frame: Consists of pairs of curved timbers (crucks) that form the main support for the roof structure. Held together by tie beams and collars. This forms an A shape which supports the purlins and wall plates. This ‘A’ shape, in turn, transfers the load of the roof directly to the ground.
- Aisled Construction: Provides extra space internally by dividing the building into a nave and two side aisles. Wall posts are internal and arcade posts and aisles covered over with lean to roofs.
Often, sections of these timber structures become susceptible to certain issues over time such as:
- Wood rot
- Insect infestation
- Mechanical wear
- Structural movement
- Moisture
With the use of traditional joinery skills and carefully selected matching timber, we can tastefully replace areas that have succumbed to any of the above problems and therefore restore these sections of timber back to their original purpose.
